05Fest: Anonyms

What’s in a name? Dive into the fascinating world of names as writer Inua Ellams invites a panel of guests to dig deep and explore the story and meaning behind their own names.

In parts of West Africa it is believed children grow to embody their names; that a child named Peace will grow up to create serenity wherever they go. Other West Africans think this is nonsense, but how do we come to be named? What then do we inherit? Do names change us? Who cares? And why should we?

Held before a live audience, Inua Ellams guides intelligent, funny and insightful guests through Anonyms, a rich, invasive and poignant exploration into what we are called, and why. Audience members are invited to come along with the story and meaning behind their own names.

This event is part of Inua Ellam's 05Fest. A week-long festival that puts poetry centre stage and unites separate strands of Ellams' work in different styles.

At Home I Speak

Following an arts residency at Gearies Primary School, Neela Doležalová’s new play explores multilingualism in contemporary Britain. Drawn from recordings with students, teachers and families, and music composition by Richard Melkonian, ‘At Home I Speak’ will enchant and provoke. Immerse yourself in the corridors of this East London school, where grandmas’ voices sing from the tannoy, and their children have plenty of stories to tell.

Includes a post-show panel discussion on attitudes to multilingualism.

He is a Barbican Young Poet alumnus and has worked and performed throughout London, the UK and internationally, in spaces ranging from the Royal Academy of Arts and St Paul’s Cathedral to venues in Riga, Latvia. He is inspired by philosophy, faith, family and identity – all of which feature massively in his writing.

Location

We’ll be in the Studio on level 1. When you enter Wellcome Collection, head up the stairs or take the lift, then follow the signs.

Saturday Studio sign-up

Each workshop has 25 spaces available and you can sign up from 13:30 in the Studio. Places are given out on a first-come, first-served basis.

Book Launch: "She Too Is A Sailor" by Antonia Jade King

Antonia Jade King’s debut pamphlet, She Too Is a Sailor is full of protest and melody. Invoking a choir of inspirational women from Beyoncé and Maya Angelou to the poet’s mother, King deconstructs what it means to be woman, to be other, to be an outsider in your own family. Intertwining pop culture with the political, this book is a reminder of art’s capacity to reclaim narratives.

Brighton Festival - Unseen Mentor: Jacob Sam-La Rose

[Raymond Carver] used to call me up every day to see if I had been writing.
— Jay McInerney

Almost any successful writer can trace a guide, someone without whom their route to acclaim would have been far more treacherous. For many poets from the UK, for the last decade and a half, Jacob Sam-La Rose has been that unseen mentor.

His influence stretches from school workshops, initiatives such as the famed Barbican Young Poets and his work as poetry editor with flipped eye publishing. Here he presents a trio of his poet-mentees: Miriam Nash, Gabriel Akamo and Bella Cox.
