05Fest: Anonyms

What’s in a name? Dive into the fascinating world of names as writer Inua Ellams invites a panel of guests to dig deep and explore the story and meaning behind their own names.

In parts of West Africa it is believed children grow to embody their names; that a child named Peace will grow up to create serenity wherever they go. Other West Africans think this is nonsense, but how do we come to be named? What then do we inherit? Do names change us? Who cares? And why should we?

Held before a live audience, Inua Ellams guides intelligent, funny and insightful guests through Anonyms, a rich, invasive and poignant exploration into what we are called, and why. Audience members are invited to come along with the story and meaning behind their own names.

This event is part of Inua Ellam's 05Fest. A week-long festival that puts poetry centre stage and unites separate strands of Ellams' work in different styles.

A Change is Gonna Come

A spirit of experimentation in the intimate setting of The Pit as the Barbican Young Poets, past and current, come together with dancers from Boy Blue.

Expect an electrifying collaboration under the artistic and creative direction of Jacob Sam-La Rose, a poet and performer of international repute, and Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante, co-founder of hip-hop dance company Boy Blue. Tapping into the musicality and rhythm of language, this show sees poets interacting with dancers, fusing the vitality and energy of spoken word with movement, as they share their personal experiences of the nation in which they find themselves living.

Exploiting a broad range of genres, styles and themes, Barbican Young Poets have evolved to become drivers for change, their voices helping to define the poetry scene in London and across the UK. Barbican Artistic Associate Boy Blue develop some of the country’s most sought-after hip-hop artists.

A Change is Gonna Come is part of our 2018 Season, The Art of Change, which explores how artists respond to, reflect and can potentially effect change in the social and political landscape. Find out more here.
