WAR DOVE × AT THE SPEED OF DARK

  • The Jago United Kingdom (map)

Affter two years, welcome to the Live Launch/2nd Birthday of Troy Cabida’s War Dove and At the Speed of Dark by Gabriel Akamo

War Dove soars with unfoldings, redefinitions and the happy refusal of a life peaceably compatible with tradition, family, or easy notions of home. Buoyant and bold, it calls to “you stretching / out of yourself ” to confront “the world’s many beatings” with tenderness and fire. Cabida’s poems champion new kinds of resistance and healing—I hear echoes of Franny Choi: “if they used it against you / it is yours / to make sing.
— R.A. Villanueva
Gabriel’s poems in this enthralling book read like written records of spiritual revelations, these poems are a poignant reflection on the emotions we experience in life, from ‘awe’ to ‘misery’. Gabriel separates himself from his body momentarily and examines what it has experienced, he draws out lessons from it and generously shares it with us to take from. The past is presented as a redacted but an unforgettable part of us that trails us. The poems are concise and direct, the conversations they conjure are intimate and presented in various distinct forms.
— Theresa Lola

Hosted by Bad Betty Press' very own Jake Wild Hall.
